Essentially all inhabited places on the planet were warmer in 2024 than the recent baseline. Most of the ocean area too.

About 1/3 of the planet experienced record high temperatures.

We know why.

And we know how to fix it.

This addresses a long-standing problem: climate models seemingly underestimate the observed early-century warming. The issue is not biases in models, it’s an incomplete understanding of measurements.

paleoclimate reconstructions.

Based on these different lines of evidence, we argue that existing estimates of ocean temperatures in the early twentieth century are too cold, despite very high agreement in other periods. (8/13)

The too pronounced ocean cold anomaly in the early 20th century thus leads to ocean cooling in the period 1871-1910, and very fast warming 1901-1940, both of which is inconsistent with the reconstructions based on global land temperatures, physical understanding, all climate models, and (7/13)

We show that quantifying GMST from ocean-only data indicate lower temperatures 1900-1930 than reconstructing from land-only data, despite all known and fixed issues with measurement practice. (4/13)

And while observations are of very high quality after WWII, the early 20th century remains a puzzle due to sparse coverage and changing measurement sources and instruments. (3/13)

Redrawing the global warming stripes.

In a new paper led by Sebastian Sippel published in Nature today, we show that the early 20th century global ocean surface temperatures and thereby global mean surface temperature were warmer than previously thought.

Achieving climate targets is primarily limited by politics, institutions and humans, not technology, solutions or money.

It's values and priorities, about who we are. (1/7)

The next US president says global warming is a hoax. If you think this is crazy, given 2024 will again be the warmest year, welcome to reality. Rough times for climate and science, not just in the US.

In the old days, things were simply not known…. (Thread 1/12)

2023 was not only the warmest year on record, but almost every day since July has seen a new global air temperature high for the time of year.
We do not fully understand what happened last year.

We talk about population growth, and most know we will peak.
Few appreciate that after the peak, population will likely fall as steeply as it increases now.

PS: This alone won't solve env. problems, but create others.

Climate change is fundamentally unfair:
The super-rich 1% were responsible the same amount of CO2 emissions (16%) as the poorest two thirds of humanity, according to the new Oxfam report.
