As a basic summation. A character action game should make you FEEL like a badass, not just tell you you are. And I feel that's been lost in recent years.

Character action games are all about the spectacle of the fight, but the spectacle is informed by skill expression. The better you get at the game, the crazier the spectacle becomes!

That first video I posted? That's just The Spectacle. It's all flash,no substance. It's the game playing for you.

What do I mean? Well, watch this footage of Nero vs Dante in DMC4 on Dante Must Die (the hardest difficulty)

You should notice immediately, that there are no "hype cinematic attacks". Everything happening is in the real time and entirely because of what the player is doing. And it;s hype as hell.

What it is, is a lot of waiting. Dodging attacks, waiting for the cinematic attack prompt to appear, then watching as the game shows you this really cool movie of your character doing something cool.

But you? You're just twindling your thumbs. There's no link between the player and the action.

First thing you'll notice is how grant the spectacle is. An alternate dimension with a grand skybox and effects flying everywhere. A setting ripped right out of the Fromsoft playbook.

But I need you to look passed that. At the gameplay. A lot of this fight is spent not actually "fighting".

Take all the time you need, bud.

Oh absolutely! But also things like Red Faction's destructible environments and Spartan Total Warrior's 170+ fully AI controlled, onscreen NPC soldiers. Just wizardry, plain and simple.

I look forward to you getting more sword money.

I'm going with Ellis from L4D2, purely because you have some utterly insane stories.

He can't see you so you can't see him. Flawless camouflage technique.
