As someone who's lived in Australia my entire life I can confidently say it affects us even in the short term, our politics follow the same trends as the US, and our culture is so heavily influenced by US imports it's impossible for changes over there to not have effects here.

Wicked only takes the basic setting from Wizard of Oz, it doesn't intend to be a faithful prequel. It's essentially a fanfiction AU, and I mean that in the most positive way possible. I wouldn't be too worried about being in the dark of Wizard of Oz stuff.
