Reloop has been at the official opening of Områ, Norway’s new national sorting facility for plastic packaging waste, designed to process up to 90,000 tonnes of mixed plastic packaging waste every year.

We’ve updated our fact sheet on support for deposit return systems ♻️

Today, there are 59 jurisdictions with systems worldwide. By 2027, there will be more than 70.

There is consistently high support for new and existing systems.

📢 Big step forward in tackling food and textile waste in Europe.

✅ By 2030, EU countries must reduce food waste by 10% in processing and manufacturing and by 30% per capita in retail, food services, restaurants, and households, compared to 2021–2023 levels.

♻️ Tasmania joins the global push for deposit return schemes with Recycle Rewards, tackling litter and lifting recycling.

With beverage containers making up 45% of Tasmainia's litter, this move makes Australia the first continent fully covered by such a system.

In 2024, Swedes returned 2.8 billion PET bottles and cans through their Deposit Return System, up nearly 6%.

That’s an average of 271 containers per person♻️

This year, Sweden raises its deposit value – a proven move to push return rates even higher.

Australia is to become the first continent to be fully covered by a deposit return system, in less than 70 days 🎉

🚮 Ireland: Beverage litter halved in <1 year.
🚯 Latvia: 56% less litter on coasts.
♻️ Queensland: 41% drop in container litter.

With a 92% return rate, Slovakia's deposit return system has stopped over three billion beverage containers from being burned, littered, or lost to the environment.
