Just an independent game maker, standing in front of a game engine, asking for it to play nice today.

Hey. I'm Holden. I'm an indie #gamedev. You can find me making mostly 2D games with #gamemaker in my spare time and doing web stuff at PlayStation (SIE) during the day. Follow along to see my game dev prototypes, releases, and bad programmer art. Nice to meet you.
I'm skeptical of platforms forcing the "play anywhere" idea in #games. Devs should have some control over how their games are made available. Forcing everything to be available everywhere increases access, but does it take away niche, hand crafted, constrained experiences. And forces work onto devs.

GenAI is like my home repair projects. It looks impressive at a glance, until you get closer to it.

Wrote my first line of code ~14 years ago, went to school for CS, have worked professionally since 2014, and still really don't understand why global variables are absolutely hated by most #programmers. Outside of concurrency issues or strict FP languages.

When developing games, I always try to build them in the order that I would play them. That's been a mistake every time and I need to stop it. #gamedev #indiedev

Lua is the simplest (in a good way) language I've ever used. You can seriously learn the entire language in an afternoon from the reference. With all my recent #gamedev projects, I'm using Love2D, Lua (Teal), a Makefile, and neovim. And it's the most fun I've had #programming in a long time.

Hey #lua and #love2d game devs, what are the big trade offs compared to other libraries or engines, for medium sized indie games? Playing around this weekend with it and really enjoying how simple it is. Also teal is great.

Underrated #games #2: Alright the pacing wasn't great, it needed balancing, but the third DBZ Legacy of Goku game (Buu's Fury, 2004) on GBA got a really bad rap because of comparisons to the second game, that was so well reviewed. I played the shit of this and had fun.

Been playing around with this "car wash" type effect in #gamemaker and ran across this cool article from Alfred on vertex painting in #godot

In-game vertex painting with Godot Engine (Wash Car Effect) - Alfred Reinold Baudisch
As stated in the experiment page, the intention here is to add and remove dirt from meshes dynamically during runtime. My… Continue reading In-game vertex painting with Godot Engine (Wash Car Effect)

If thou art a #gamemaker developer, thou must grasp the hallowed order of events. Has anyone seen a visual for this? Similar to the Unity docs.

Survey gamers on their favorite themes. Where would "video poker" fall? Probably low, but look at Balatro go. We're cool with a well made version of just about anything (romance or not), and tired of bad versions of it.

'These kids do not care about romance': Game devs want to know what today's teens want, and surveys say sex and romance isn't it
Young people want stories about friendship more than romance, say researchers and industry execs.

Using ImGUI has been so useful for building quick debug tools for my #gamemaker prototypes over the past few months. Highly recommend it for #gamedev folks out there, especially when you're wanting to tweak a lot of numbers at runtime while balancing or otherwise.

Stumbled across this game design course from 2009 and its got a bunch of interesting references and info for any interested #gamedev or designer gamedesignconcepts.wordpress.com/2009/04/21/s...

It's rare in AAA, but let's not pretend that there haven't been more fantastic, indie, short experiences released over the past few years than any of us realistically have time to play. It's unfair to the devs doing this type of work.
I miss games that are about 8-20h long and have linear gameplay/stories. Not every game has to be open world and 60+h long😭

I'm so sick of it. If you don't have extensive worldbuilding to fill that world just tell your story in a (semi) linear way 🥲

Underrated #games #1: Final Fantasy 3 DS. IGN said "Just know that the game definitely has its flaws, lacks a ton of DS presentation, and can be incredibly difficult". I had a blast with this game as a kid.

Anyone still using #gamemaker alarms instead of time sources? Explain yourself please.
