I was very good at dropping into any system environment and getting shit done fast. He was probably better. Masters of Doom has the details, which I don’t trust myself to rehash from memory, but our collaboration on the SNES port of Wolfenstein 3D completely blew up and left us in a bad position, forcing me to drop what I was doing and do the port myself. We were mad, but eventually it was water under the bridge, and we wound up working together on additional Id projects afterwards. It was a useful cautionary tale about how brilliant technical people don’t always make wise decisions in other parts of their life. Bill became Rebecca, and we had email and Twitter contacts (@burgerbecky) over the years. We finally ran into each other again virtually at the covid Kansas Fest (still going after all these years!) and had some fun back and forth on ancient technical topics. They were living in Dallas with Jennell Jaquays, who had been a designer at Id, and I had some intention of getting out for a visit, but it never happened.

Basing itself on the spirit of the Bosnian ordinary populace outside of the cultural mainstream, the movement was credited with introducing the jargon of Sarajevo mahalas (brimming with slang and Turkish loanwords) into the official Yugoslav public scene. Many of the New Primitivism songs and sketches involve stories of "small people" — pensioners, coalminers, petty criminals, street thugs, provincial girls, etc. — being placed in unusual and absurd situations. Stylistically, the New Primitives' methods drew comparisons to Monty Python's Flying Circus, sharing the short sketch form and utilizing absurdity as a means of eliciting laughs from an audience. I take religious claims to be neither more nor less open to rational assessment than any other sorts of claims. Any difference there is concerns difficulty, not possibility. Nor do I see any reason to think that offering rational assessment of religious claims is in principle harder than, say, assessing attempts to offer a unified theory for all of physics, or to solve the problems of the foundations of modal logic. Contrary to the preferences of some philosophers, some Religious Studies professors, and even some religious thinkers themselves, religious traditions do make claims. They are anything remotely like what they claim to be only if what they say is true. I shall offer respect to the diversity of religious traditions by taking those claims seriously enough to try to see what can be said for and against them.

Some now refer to this standard meaning as "positive atheism" and contrast it with the broader notion of "negative atheism" which has the meaning you suggest--that 'atheism' simply means not-theist. In our understanding, the argument for this broader notion was introduced into the philosophical literature by Antony Flew in "The Presumption of Atheism" (1972). In that work, he noted that he was using an etymological argument to try to convince people *not* to follow the *standard meaning* of the term. His goal was to reframe the debate about the existence of God and to re-brand "atheism" as a default position. Not everyone has been convinced to use the term in Flew's way simply on the force of his argument. For some, who consider themselves atheists in the traditional sense, Flew's efforts seemed to be an attempt to water down a perfectly good concept. For others, who consider themselves agnostics in the traditional sense, Flew's efforts seemed to be an attempt to re-label them "atheists" -- a term they rejected. All that said, we are continuing to examine the situation regarding the definitions as presented in this entry.

me: thinking of all the historians I've read who debunk this platitude but it's impossible to explain this in a few pithy sentences

it's a hard life
It is a very lazy and ultimately harmful way to introduce the concept of bias. There isn't really a perfectly pithy way to cover such a complex topic, but much better than winners writing history is writers writing history. This is more useful than it initially seems because until fairly recently the literate were a minority, and those with enough literary training to actually write historical narratives formed an even smaller and more distinct class within that. To give a few examples, Genghis Khan must surely go down as one of the great victors in all history, but he is generally viewed quite unfavorably in practically all sources, because his conquests tended to harm the literary classes. Or within my speciality, the senatorial elite can be argued to have "lost" the struggle at the end of the Republic that eventually produced Augustus, but the Roman literary classes were fairly ensconced within (or at least sympathetic towards) that order, and thus we often see the fall of the Republic presented negatively. Of course, writers are a diverse set, and so this is far from a magical solution to solving the problems of bias. The painful truth is, each source simply needs to be evaluated on its own merits.

The very small genetic distance between humans and chimps might tempt us to try the most potentially interesting and ethically unacceptable scientific experiment I can imagine—to hybridize our two species and simply to ask the offspring what it is like to be, at least in part, a chimpanzee. This interbreeding may well be possible—so small are the genetic distances that separate us. But, lest we fear the rise of a race comparable to the heroes in Planet of the Apes, I hasten to add that the hybrids would almost certainly be sterile—like a mule, and for the same reason.

Abstract This paper examines the perception and usage of Magna Carta in interregnum England. The central question is whether or not Oliver Cromwell ever referred to this royal document as the "Magna Farta." While one of the most common posthumous charges against him was a disdain for Magna Carta and English rights, accounts of his calling it a "Magna Farta" are questionable. The ways in which the Magna Carta was actually used under Cromwell rather seems to indicate a different opinion. Essentially, this paper compares royalist propaganda with the Commonwealth's accounts.
