‘Oh I guess that I just don’t know.' Hard line pragmatist. Yes to romance, no to magical thinking. Velvet Underground, The Fall, Lee Perry, Beefheart, Can, Sly. Labour social democrat. Sixty-two.

Near a mountain in Wales, United Kingdom
If it’s the property tax it’s only raising £0.5 billion anyway. I’m a huge supporter but I don’t want to overclaim for it.

It’s mainly about trying to save public services, please the PLP and raise tax to do so. The focus on growth to pay for this seems to have been downgraded. That’s not good in the medium term.

I don’t think Reeves wanted this. She really intended securonomics and so did I.

Starmer doesn’t get it.

If they will never vote for Labour, Labour will never win. Labour has won with this coalition in most of the past. It is the social and political fault line across most western democracies. I’m not sure the answer is to focus on more middle class supporters of the more left wing parties.

I was a bit glib. I agree closure of a university would affect the area and potentially region. But I fear outside that area people will feel great sympathy but not challenge the model in which a university can close like a business. Politically a university is like a closing oil refinery.

Yes. But how many of those are there in a country of 70 million? Not sure we’re that altruistic.

I reacted to OP and your first post.

Unpopular with members. Voters agnostic (average).

Posted by you. There is no mention of whether X is any good or not (in my view it isn’t but because it is not).

Started out like that in 1930s(?). Now creates uniform identities and assigns individuals to those identities such that their views must be the views of the identity. Like Roman Catholics and Protestants in the Troubles in Northern Ireland. You can see where the point started but it’s deteriorated.

Popularity among members: yes. Among voters? Not so sure. The party faces this dilemma across all potential leadership candidates.

Jesus dealt with people as individuals not categories. So he was extremely compassionate but not ‘woke’.
November 23, 2025 at 1:36 PM
Thanks. Extraordinary record. Still startles.
November 23, 2025 at 1:32 PM
I don’t know. All I’m saying is you can get a ticket from Hereford to London for £1.42 in advance.
November 23, 2025 at 12:17 PM
Buy in advance and British trains are equal cheapest of the big four networks in western Europe.

He's saying exactly the opposite. He's feeling outflanked. Even by the Reform animals. The far right is weaker in countries that manage their borders well. Canada.

Charging at the machine guns is a stupid way to achieve nothing and die. You carry on.
November 19, 2025 at 9:36 PM
That's naive bordering on brain dead.
November 19, 2025 at 9:32 PM
That's good.
November 19, 2025 at 9:31 PM
That's not true. Read Hansard. If they want state support, Rings fine, Gold bars not fine. If they don't want state support, it's their business.
November 19, 2025 at 9:30 PM
Everyone should be treated the same. If the state is funding someone but they are allowed to keep Audis and gold bars as you want that brings the policy into disrepute with the public who have to fund such an abuse. That fuels dangerous far right politics and stopping that is my number 1 concern.
November 19, 2025 at 9:27 PM
It's not 'OK' today. It's a fault in the rules which the government is repairing. This will put UK and other citizens on roughly the same footing.
November 19, 2025 at 9:21 PM
Depends on the value of the car. Again, read Hansard. The Home Secretary made clear the value of an Audi would be used to support the person before any state funding kicked in.
November 19, 2025 at 9:19 PM
They do. You go into a hotel and they take a list of your belongings and basically strip the room.
November 19, 2025 at 9:16 PM
Not true. You can own a car or ornament but you cannot dump your savings in a new Audi or Henry Moore. Yes to jewellery no to gold bars.
November 19, 2025 at 9:15 PM
What is 'it'? Are you too young for this? The point is voters in all countries don't trust governments to deliver public services if they can't even maintain the borders. The new policy will fix that. You cannot see this, so you pick away at lies you've picked up in the student union or at AA.
