Visited Helios at Basildon Park - a 7 m installation of the Sun hanging among the trees in the grounds, and with soundscapes that are real recordings from space. 1 cm of the image on the sphere represents 2000 km on the surface of the Sun! 🤩☀️✨ #SciArt

In recent days, southern Europe has faced heatwaves ☀️ Thermal Trace maps show feels-like temps reaching 46°C – the ‘extreme heat stress’ threshold – in Spain on 14-15 August and 47°C on 11-12 August 🥵 In SW France, feels-like temps reached 45°C – that's up to 14°C above average! 🌡️

Excited to share our new app Thermal Trace!

Thermal stress = health impacts of exposure to extreme thermal conditions (heatwaves, cold spells)

Use Thermal Trace to monitor heat & cold stress globally (five days behind real time) & explore changes over time 🥵🥶

Exceptional Mediterranean water temperatures in June reduced nighttime air cooling along the coasts & increased humidity, worsening heat stress impacts - some coastal areas saw 10-15 tropical nights (when the temperature doesn’t drop below 20°C) last month, when they’d typically see none in June 🥵☀️🌙

Two significant heatwaves in Europe in June meant that many people experienced more heat stress days than average: 'very strong heat stress' experienced across a lot of southern and western Europe, and part of Portugal saw 'extreme heat stress' 🥵

I’ll be at the European Climate Change Adaptation #ECCA2025 conference this week in Rimini supporting our EU project I-CISK, which has been co-creating human-centred, tailored climate services with partners and decision-makers in seven different countries in Europe & beyond 🌍🌐📈

For #ESOTC2024 we took a detailed look at heat & drought in southeastern Europe last summer: 6 heatwaves, the region’s longest heatwave on record at 13 days, record numbers of heat stress days and tropical nights, few days between heatwaves 🥵🔥

The area affected by at least ‘strong heat stress’ reached a new record maximum on 10 July 2024, when around 44% of the globe was affected by ‘strong’ to ‘extreme heat stress’. This is 5% more than the average annual maximum.
January 10, 2025 at 11:29 PM
How many days with at least ‘strong heat stress’ did you experience in 2024? Much of the globe (61% of land areas) saw more days than average with this degree of heat stress 🥵

This was an entertaining read while enjoying this morning’s coffee in the sunshine 😆☀️☕️(before I head off to do some heat stress analysis for climate monitoring of course! And maybe I’ll add essential emoji use to the next ESOTC writing guidelines… 📝📈)

Did you know the #ECMWF forecasting system was upgraded this week? 🌐

One of my favourite updates: new forecasts of thermal stress 🥵🥶 - UTCI, wet bulb globe temperature, wind chill, heat index & humidex - are now openly available in our charts catalogue! 🗺️

The latest ECMWF newsletter is now published 📝

Alongside articles on #MachineLearning ensembles & IFS upgrades, we wrote an article on the extreme heat in southeastern Europe this summer 🥵

We talk about how this was predicted & the #HeatStress people experienced: www.ecmwf.int/sites/defaul...

2023 was the warmest year on record 🔥 📈

So many records broken, so many extreme events, and chart after chart, data point after data point showing us without a shadow of a doubt that our climate is warming, and greenhouse gases are still rising…

2023 is on track to be the warmest year on record ⚠️

Globally, we've just had the warmest October on record... following the warmest June, July, August & September on record. The year so far is 1.43°C above pre-industrial levels 🌍🌡️📈
