This month’s labour market data shows a jobs market losing momentum.

Unemployment has risen to 5.0%, the highest since the pandemic, with 1.79 million people now looking for work.

But what’s most concerning isn’t inflow — it’s outflow. People are finding it harder to get back into work. 🧵

3/6: Wages are growing faster than inflation (4.9%) – yet in real terms, workers are only £20 better off per week than they were in 2008. Wage stagnation remains a huge problem, especially for the 6.8m people in insecure, low-paid jobs.

2/4: Major issue is long-term sickness keeping 2.79m people out of the workforce, up by 658k since pre-pandemic. This is a challenge for public services + the economy. Graph shows increase in long-term since from 2019 to 2024.

After an amazing #ESA2024, stumbled onto a book fair in the Crystal Palace Gardens in Porto. Cannot believe my luck but very worried about my luggage allowance on the way home!
