These policies stem (in part) from a fundamental failure to imagine being displaced, to think about what we would all grab from our houses if we were forced to run, to consider the fundamental inhumanity of stripping people of the only belongings that they have left when they ask for refuge.

The government has claimed that today marks a breaking point from previous policy, but refugees have been kept in limbo for years and states are always trying to determine whether they could uproot and remove them. Today things have gotten far worse, but let's not pretend that things were good.

To summarize (what I thought was an obviously point), temporary refugee protection prolongs the existing wrongs and harms of displacement in a way that then implicates the state in the ongoing injustice.
