More than 30 years ago a close friend gave me Hiawyn Oram's 'Angry Arthur', about a boy who loses his temper with hilarious, world-shattering consequences. It's been helping families cope with tantrums ever since. Satoshi Kitamura's spiky illustrations are perfect here.

The Eyebrows of Doom by Steve Smallman and Miguel Ordóñez is the funniest reading-aloud book in the history of reading aloud. Ready for fun , Eyebrow one? Don't mind if I do, Eyebrow two.

Readwyrm does get indigestion from time to time. Too many newsbites in Jan 2024. I encourage them to stick to picture books whenever their tummy gets rumbly.

Grahame Baker-Smith's book about the water cycle, Rhythm of the Rain, is a glorious festival of water and landscape painting. It follows the vastness of water's journey, from rain to river to ocean to cloud and back to mountaintop, through the eyes of children, each caught in a watery moment.

A thread about picture books, old and new. Apart from being favourites of mine, the links between them are one or more of:

They are beautifully illustrated

They contain accurate facts and/or life-enhancing concepts

They may also contain a note (or, indeed, a cacophony) of humour

Be patient. Soon Readwyrm will emerge, ready to help you choose books for yourself, your child, or your friends. Because all reading is good reading. But some reading is better. #books #lovereading

In a cave deep beneath the magma chamber of an extinct volcano on the Isle of Mull, Readwyrm lies sleeping. If you dig down (though please don’t) you won’t find gleaming goblets and golden coins. Books… #books are everywhere...
