I've not yet read Rabih Alameddine's "The True True Story of Raja the Gullible (and His Mother," the 2025 Fiction winner. But I hope to, and I hope someday we can bring him to Buffalo.

Pope Bob from Chicago can't rescue the American 'brand' (if you want to call it that) around the world, but he is a significant moral counterweight against Trump the transactionalist.

But his principled pushback against Trumpism, oligarchic capitalism, anti-immigrant xenophobia, and especially the musings of that fledgling theologian J.D. Vance, is a joy to behold.

We shouldn't expect too much from him doctrinally, because he is already way to the Left of the American bishops and Cardinals on most issues, and might trigger a schism or mutiny if he relaxes the Church's positions on reproductive rights and LGBQTIA+ rights around the world.

She served as a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets from 2001 to 2006. In 2011, she received Yale University’s Bollingen Prize in American Poetry. She lives in Guilford, Connecticut.
