THIS! THIS!THIS!THIS! I always felt weird pledging to... a piece of cloth. Often made in China. If members of the Armed Forces, the FBI & other governmental workers dealing with sensitive tasks take an oath to uphold the Constitution, why not the rest of us??

Yeah, & then suddenly, they have to flip their own dang burgers - oh, wait, by their logic, isn't cooking - shock! horror! - wimmin's werk??//

Mind you, I've DNFed maybe less than 10 books out of the 100s I've read in a lifetime of reading. I do try & give most reads a chance, but if it wears too hard on my patience, I'll let it go & find something more engaging. (4/4)

I'll name & shame DNFing "Eat Pray Love" after 3 chapters because the author has an utterly insufferable attitude. Not someone I wanted to spend an entire book with, when they sounded like someone who'd talk down to service workers. (3/?)

I've DNFed when a book clearly read more like a first draft than a finished work (won't name & shame, but I dropped one when the first chapter read like a summary of the rest of the book - this wasn't a selfpub, either). I've DNFed when the main characters sounded more like author mouthpieces. 2/?)

It's very much an "It Depends..." situation. I've started DNFing more recently, but if I've invested enough in a book, I'll give it a chance. However if something genuinely bugs me (eg. very poor writing, characters who bore me, shaky premise), I'll eventually let it go (1/?).

Every soldier who stormed the beaches at Anzio & Normandy in the 1940a would be appalled.
