Traditionally, it was celebrated through dramatizations of the events leading up to the Birth of Christ, but the plays lost favour with the Church over time, and were eventually banned when they became popular through the addition of folk-music and other non-religious elements.

One of the 9 candles (the one in the middle) is positioned higher than the rest and is called the Shammash, and it is used to light each of the remaining 8 candles during Hanukkah - one for each night - so by the end of Hanukkah, all the candles would be lit.

The festival commemorates the recovery of Jerusalem and the subsequent rededication of the Second Temple , and is observed by lighting the candles of a nine-branch candelabrum called a menorah - not to be confused with the 7 branch candelabra that is the Advent Tree !

Traditional sweets during Lucia include gingerbread cookies and saffron buns twisted to look like curled-up cats with raisin eyes (lussekatter) - which, because the Swedes like puns, has also now become a time to vote for the nations favourite pet kitty :3

To celebrate her sacrifice and dedication, in Scandinavia, young girls are dressed in white dresses with a red sash around their waist. The child "chosen" as Lucia would also don a wreath with (electric) candles atop their head, and they would then walk in a procession and while singing.

As a sign of devotion to Mary, many pilgrims travel to this site to show gratitude for favors recieved from her during the year. Celebrations and festivities are held outside the shrine, while priests and bishops from all over Mexico gather inside for Mass.
