"Don't actively cause harm to people out of bigotry" is not a purity test. It's table stakes.

What's the problem with that?

The Duke of Burgundy is gorgeous, very gay and heartbreaking.

I thought George Lucas had accidentally recorded over it or something.

If we assume good faith, it's because settling the issue asap is of paramount importance. That's a gigantic if obviously.

Also, there is the zeal of the newly converted effect that affects pretty much everyone using it since the technology is so new. I was insufferable as a brand new Linux user many years ago, but these days I'm insufferable for completely different reasons.

I think that can be explained by them noticing some people are openly hostile to the use of LLMs and wanting social validation to balance that social disapproval. I'm pretty sure I've seen versions of that for pretty much every controversial technology that is accessible by skeptics.

Not if you're looking for examples of how the US deals with its own people committing war crimes.

I think the answer is that enough people are convinced they won't be the ones murdered.

Starfleet Academy is in San Francisco. They all live in a group house. They're a bunch of nerds. Of course it's a polycule!

It's almost like the democrats have made it obvious which in their ranks they are willing and quite happy to sacrifice and is therefore an easy target.

Big tech companies have projects that are purely for PR purposes and will never actually go beyond a bit of research. Datacenters in space are (imo, not speaking for my employer) exactly that. It sounds cool and futuristic, but it's not gonna happen.

Pardon or no, I very much doubt anyone in the upper levels of the US government will be interested in prosecuting him. It's really not hard to find war crimes and murders done on the orders of every SecDef. People in power really don't want to face accountability.
December 3, 2025 at 9:24 PM
Right, but that only allows him to get out of malice, not recklessness. Even if he didn't expect people to follow through, any reasonable person would, which afaict is the standard for command responsibility.
December 3, 2025 at 8:51 PM
The most severe punishment I could find the US imposing on one of its senior officers for war crimes was to demote him by a single rank... I'm sure he would rather not be busted down to vice admiral, but that's not much of a deterrent.
