Global healthcare providers are exploring use of large language models (LLMs) to provide medical advice to the public. LLMs now achieve nearly perfect scores on medical licensing exams, but this does not necessarily translate to accurate performance in real-world settings. We tested if LLMs can assist members of the public in identifying underlying conditions and choosing a course of action (disposition) in ten medical scenarios in a controlled study with 1,298 participants. Participants were randomly assigned to receive assistance from an LLM (GPT-4o, Llama 3, Command R+) or a source of their choice (control). Tested alone, LLMs complete the scenarios accurately, correctly identifying conditions in 94.9% of cases and disposition in 56.3% on average. However, participants using the same LLMs identified relevant conditions in less than 34.5% of cases and disposition in less than 44.2%, both no better than the control group. We identify user interactions as a challenge to the deployment of LLMs for medical advice. Standard benchmarks for medical knowledge and simulated patient interactions do not predict the failures we find with human participants. Moving forward, we recommend systematic human user testing to evaluate interactive capabilities prior to public deployments in healthcare.

When one woman complained that her doctor’s office had been dismissive, a chatbot offered this reassuring reply:
The nicer doctor It’s not hard to see what so many people like about chatbots. They have an encyclopedic knowledge of medical literature, sure. But so many users told us that a big part of the appeal was that the A.I. offered a kinder version of health care. One woman asked for help diagnosing a tingly feeling in her hand that, she told ChatGPT, she suspected stemmed from an issue with her median nerve. “You’re describing something that fits beautifully with how the median nerve runs through the forearm,” it replied. Chatbots often wrote how sorry they were to hear about the users’ symptoms and how “great” and “important” their questions were. Sometimes, they even commiserated with users about the health system. When one woman complained that her doctor’s office had been dismissive, a chatbot offered this reassuring reply: Green and gray text bubbles between Catherine Rawson and "Microsoft Copilot." Another woman, frustrated that her human provider wasn’t matching ChatGPT’s bedside manner, sent her oncologist a list of kind messages the bot had sent her — things she thought the doctor “should have said to me.”

Here’s why our race for governor in Texas in 2026 should be the priority for every American. By the end of this decade, in a little more than 4 years, the Brennan Center predicts that Texas will gain 4-5 new congressional seats because of population growth that is expected to be reflected in the 2030 Census. Texas will be taking those congressional seats from Democratic-majority states like California. What this means is if Texas doesn’t flip blue by the end of the decade, there will not be Democratic control of Congress for a generation. And because congressional seats equate to electoral votes, the same is true for the presidency. If Texas does not flip blue before the end of the decade, there will not be a Democratic United States President for a generation. That’s just math. A Democratic governor of Texas can insist on fair maps and veto any maps aimed to silence the will of the voters. Recent history tells us that this midterm after Trump’s re-election is our best chance to make gains for Democrats. The 2018 midterm after Trump was elected the first time, Democrats swept in Texas. Democrats won 12 seats in the Texas House and made additional gains across the state without national “battleground” funding. This time we must be ready. The fate of the Union depends on it.

United charges $750 annually for individual access to its airport lounge network. Amex recently announced that the annual fee for its Platinum card—which includes the perk of lounge access—is increasing from $695 to $895. And one of the most popular travel perk cards, the Chase Sapphire Reserve, just ratcheted up its annual fee from $550 to $795.
