“I have always felt it was important to take research out of academic journals and into the public sphere, to share with people what research has to offer, how it can help them make their own choices”.

Wonderful lecture from Sun Sun Lim as she accepts her honorary professorship at U of Copenhagen.

What if people appreciate having an abundance of content and communication, more than they feel overloaded by it?

@annisch.bsky.social et al decided to have a look. Their results? "We found that appreciation for abundance was about twice as common as overload".

What kinds of creators work on news and around news?

Many defy categorisation, but, on the basis of open survey responses, Nic Newman & co have developed an audience-based typology of news-creators and news-adjacent creators

Finally, as search engines increasingly integrate AI generated answers, we asked about trust in these – the trust scores are high across the board, with higher net positives than any of the standalone tools.

All this and more in the report here reutersinstitute.politics.ox.ac.uk/generative-a... 3/3

Asked whether they trust different AI tools, the picture is very differentiated, with net positive trust scores for e.g. ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot, but negatives for those that are seen as part of various social media companies 2/3

How do people think different sectors’ use of generative AI will change their experience of interacting with them?

More optimists than pessimists for e.g. science and search engines, but more pessimists than optimists for news media, government, and – especially – politicians 1/3

"Time spent on social media peaked in 2022 and has since gone into steady decline" John Burn-Murdoch notes.

For those interested in screen use in a broader sense, worth comparing to e.g. Ofcom figures on TV/video watching as a reminder of just how much time most of us spend with the big screen.

Spent all day in Brussels discussing DSA, systemic risks, mitigation measures, and where news media fits in to all of it. Consistently impressed by the thoughtful professionalism of the civil servants I meet and encouraged by the commitment of the MEPs who care about these issues

What IS in decline is direct traffic. Down from 15.7% of in July '19 to 11.5% in July '25. That tracks with other sources like the @reutersinstitute.bsky.social Digital News Report survey data, and while less spectacular than the risk of zero-click search is concerning for publishers in itself.

Much of the public is concerned about what is real and fake when it comes to online news

So what do people do if & when they want to check something important in the news that they suspect may be false, misleading, or fake?

How effective are user corrections on social media, and does adding a link to a fact check improve effectiveness?

In piece led by @sachaltay.bsky.social we find corrections have small effects, adding a fact-check unlikely to make them more effective misinforeview.hks.harvard.edu/article/the-... 1/6

What are examples of news media that do a great job of serving poor people? That was the last question I asked of Carolyn Ryan, Sally Buzbee, and Kevin Ponniah at the US launch of the @reutersinstitute.bsky.social Digital News Report.

Honestly we struggled a bit - if you know any, please share!

Was asked about alternatives to dependence on US American big for-profit platform companies at the Internet Governance Forum #IGF2025 today.

It seems to me the response depends on which part of that phrase you stress. More here rasmuskleisnielsen.net/2025/06/23/u...

We document continued fragmentation of the platform space. There are now six networks with news reach of 10% or more compared with just two a decade ago. Instagram, WhatApp, TikTok in particular have grown in importance, whereas BSky only has tiny reach among our respondents. 3/7

A sobering read for media. With some exceptions (many in Europe), it is platforms up, most publishers down. Lead author Nic Newman writes: “We find traditional news media struggling to connect with much of the public, with declining engagement, low trust, and stagnating digital subscriptions” 2/7
