Yeah, sometimes things have to be enjoyed as what they are/what you get out of them! As a kid I didn't really like Ghibli films (Howl's the most maybe because it was straightforward and more "western"), which is why I've really been thinking of revisiting them now as I'm older.

Miyazaki's adaptations are very..."auteur", I might say? Which is an interesting contrast to movies like How to Train Your Dragon versus the book, and other more commercial adaptations. Like it feels he concentrates on few parts that are important, which doesn't always make the movie overall better.

Its a common thing with Miyazaki's works, actually, due to his own traumas from WW2 so he explores various parts of war in the films:
