REEL formed when three refugees from The Psychedelic Duelling Wars congealed in the psychic wreckage of a Somerset studio to record Wild Garlick electronics, eschatological ambience & brown acid techno on adapted bits of farm machinery & petrol cans

Wow, logged onto DISSENSUS again for the first time in what must be 15 years and had a lovely time in there. Good to see so many of the old bloggers again, in post form at least.

I’ve started (again) taking little slim paperbacks (poetry is good) that fit in my jeans pocket to read while waiting for friends because they are always late & there’s something just awful about waiting in pubs looking at my phone - but now…
Oh fuck off

Watched Michael Haneke’s The Seventh Continent this morning at 5am (long, dull story). Crikey. Thought I’d already watched it - had the box set for years - but, unless my traumatised mind has repressed it, it turns out I haven’t. By all accounts Haneke is actually a bit of a laugh.

You’d think whoever came up with ‘What if Street Art but Meme?’ idea might have trashed it at conception but we live in a 6/7 world so 🤷 I’ve seen the ‘I farted in yoga’ things in a few places now.
Pretty bad at photos yesterday and didn't get one of the graffiti that said 'Funk Zomby' but I got this

Only saw 30 mins of the Cremaster Cycle in a gallery in Paris 20 years ago but I do think of it now and then. I guess one day I’ll see the whole thing

I understand how attractive / addictive streaming is & its utility re: finding out of press records etc but I’ve never been able to shake the absolute horror I feel about having access to all music at all times… I love the uncertainty of needing to make a choice at some level
I think it’s probably the ONLY good reason to stream but I also always liked it when music I wanted to hear WASN’T available & remained shrouded in mystery - some latent masochism perhaps

Absolutely loving this van Dijk vs Rooney interview… Rooney turning into Partridge before our eyes, Virgil being incredibly statesmanlike and analytical in his responses #LFC

I was hoping for Throbbing Gristle’s Slug Bait. Next year, perhaps.
Well, I didn’t think they would have used an acoustic version of the theme from Knight Rider for this year’s John Lewis Christmas advert, and I was right, they didn’t.

Remember a long conversation I had with someone at a conference who was doing a PhD on the incredible levels of gang-related knife crime in London in the 50s… and during The Blitz
Britain is not in the grip of mass violence.

The Cambridgeshire train stabbings were horrific - and incredibly rare.

Your odds of being attacked by a stranger are much lower than they were.

Here's the facts! 👇

Exactly the reason why people should always try and see the ‘support’ bands - lots of them became my favourite artists (and still do)
The punch line: I saw them and Melvins open for Pearl Jam, who I actually went to see. Little did I know what I would become.

There’s not that many 80s bands I could still be arsed to see again now but The Butthole Surfers always seemed weirdly ageless, as if they’d crawled out of some thermal duct like a Cthulhu cult, or maybe Cthulhu himself.

Just found this on iplayer. Used to have to watch really dodgy YouTube clips of this stuff. A strange (very brown) joy. This is the kind of thing all the ‘hauntology’ guys ought to be lamenting.
BBC4 are showing The Great Philosophers series from the 70s atm... incredible now to think two guys sat debating Hegel & Marx for 40 minutes used to go out on terrestrial TV at a time when there were only three channels.

And of course one of them looked like this...

Just had a glance at a random year: The Fall, LFO, Carter, Massive Attack, Swans, Buttholes, Primal Scream, Nirvana, Babes in Toyland plus lots of Hip Hop in the 1991 NME Top 20… sounds quite a lot LIKE the UK in 1991, at least
Going through the Melody Maker and NME best albums lists from the early 1990s... I'm up to 1993. Some very questionable choices in there... and a few albums now considered masterpieces are ranked terribly low.

The Quietus @thequietus.com & Freq @freqzine.bsky.social would be a good place to start
If you have the means, now is a great time to financially support news orgs that aren't owned and/or run by awful people.

In years to come, as the humanity vs AI battle lines are drawn and redrawn, the mysterious appearance of the ‘William Tyler link’ will be as well known as Neville Chamberlain’s ‘peace for our time’ speech & that scrap of paper he was waving about in 1938.
