European at core
Into military stuff nowadays, out of necessity

This used to be Politics 101, but we've become so confused about what parliamentary democracy is that it's now regarded as some kind of humiliation if elected representatives get to influence policy.

More of this, please!

Finland like France fully subscribes to the NEVER AGAIN mindset: defence is existential and we're not letting bad economy or grim macro numbers derail us

I mean I love Ireland, irrationally even, to the point that I think everything about Ireland is awesome and the Irish can do no wrong (warts & all) but on this I think they are just being silly.

It's leaving money on the table given R&D, startup, cyber, space and business things it does well

Yeah, it sort of defies logic. Nobody's asking for Ireland to send troops anywhere or anything like that, just make sure you're not sitting duck for the Russians so other European countries can focus on Ukraine & Europe.

It doesn't need 5% of GDP

So many wonderful humans in this country like your mum, doing their bit to make up for the repeated failings of the state

Yes but the the govt can't blame it on Pres in the sense that they can do all that they need to do for defence and security (call it economic security) irrespective of what the Pres thinks or says.
And there's plenty of scope to frame this as solidarity even for a hard core leftist

Pressure just keeps building. The drum of military and security people warning politicians about the threat is harder and harder to ignore.
And then helpfully US continues to do monumentally shitty stuff that again is harder to ignore

There's isn't really a European equivalent for a mature design attack helicopter produced at scale.

Italian Leonardo AW249 still under development.

When Poland started seriously re-arming (before Trump 2.0) US stuff was what was available so then you keep going with US stuff

The map that Politico had today in their article about France introducing voluntary military service already changing.

The striped countries have introduced voluntary
