The Iranian people are in the midst of a bloody uprising. It took them 47 years to reach this moment. Many attempts failed, but the powder keg of resentment kept building within society. That powder keg has now ignited—the explosion was inevitable. Iran’s so-called Islamic Revolution failed long ago. The Khomeini and Khamenei-led governments have stayed in power against the will of the majority through brutal repression. They imposed Sharia law—a system both impractical and irrational for governing a modern state. Even an functioning economy could have offered some relief, but when 1 dollar equals 1 million Iranian rials, misery becomes unbearable. No one should have to carry bags of cash to buy basic groceries. But the deeper wound is the loss of **ownership**. You are the owner of your own country. Even Bangladesh’s constitution acknowledges this—the collective ownership of 18 crore people. We form states and governments to protect that ownership, to live freely and without fear. But when autocrats seize control, you become a paper citizen—stripped of real rights. Your land is taken, you’re labeled and arrested without cause, you seek justice and find none. In your own country, you become a kind of **"refugee"**—without even basic rights. This agony drives people to desperately seek liberation. After the Islamic Revolution, Iranians found themselves in exactly this position. Their dream of change shattered, they were turned into citizens without ownership. And when a state denies its people the right of ownership, it treats their lives as **"expendable."** In the July 2024 uprising, 1,400 people were killed—thousands more left with lifelong injuries. The sacrifice of Mahsa Amini and thousands of other Iranians must not be in vain. I stand with their struggle to reclaim their right of ownership.
