I've met people who were surprised to learn that Tatarstan is part of Russia, even though Kazan is considered as third capital, and region itself is one of the few that earns money, although Moscow takes most of revenue.

Russian history is essentially a complete mess. At various points in history the state has obstructed research and hides many archives, and some more ancient sources have been lost.

Paradoxically, over the centuries of such Russification, it is precisely Russian culture that has lost its authenticity, and the same Putinists are often subjected to this ideology precisely because of an ethnic identity crisis.

Respect for other ethnicities is sorely lacking in Russia. And the war with Ukraine is also going down this path; propagandists are constantly telling us that there is no Ukrainian culture, that it's just a variation of Russian.

And Putinists are trying to erase the difference between "русский" and "россиянин", but at the same time, if you are not ethnically Russian, then you are still less worthy.

There is a certain similarity with american white nationalists: they showed up where they weren't invited, but they dare to dictate the rules.
