This is all a very wordy way of saying I really appreciate the nuance of Gladys as a character and person, and the way this is being revealed narratively in these direct and indirect ways, mixing violations of Bethany's autonomy and person with violations of Gladys' own.

A modern audience condemns her unforgivingly, and by no means does this excuse her treatment of Beth--but I think she is actually a sympathetic character. Releasing or escaping her own traumas has, to her, only catastrophic consequences. So of course that oppressive logic is applied to Bethany.

This is what compels me about Gladys. She manifests the cycle of traumas and abuses (big and small) that she came from and is living--not just overtly, although here it is overt, but in her oppressive logic.
