And it cost $x to collect and process the fines (card/cash processing equipment on checkouts, staff training and time) and we collected $y in fines. $x > $y. We were overall losing tax money by collecting fines. 2/2

…and when you look at overall costs, quite a few cases it’s a heck of a lot more efficient, on multiple axes, to stop policing and incremental enforcement. Our library was considering doing away with late fines. 1/2
