The problem is reaching those who could enjoy your work. Targeted marketing takes significant time and effort, as well as a sizable budget - with the budget being the enabler.

(15 years & 50 books later.) If you're not good at marketing, you don't stand a chance. Sadly running your writing life as a business is essential.
Which I loathe.
My effort goes into working with the best I can find/afford to make each book as good as possible.
The rest I have to leave to luck.

The ludicrous peer pressure enabled by social media is disgusting.
Write your book/s any damn way you like.
Publish it/them whenever you want.
Ignore anyone who insists you need to do either in a particular way/format/routine etc.
This authoring lark is tough enough without hecklers.
