I think the drop off in intrinsic motivation is also a result of the education system. Between grades, gold stars, and pizza parties for reading books, there are far too many rewards teaching kids it's all about extrinsic motivation!

When was it decided that school has to be a joyless place and that "schooling" has to be miserable? Decision makers clearly aren't following the research, so they must be abiding by those beliefs. Sigh.

It's sad how long ago some of these brilliant observations were made...and how little has changed since then.

Sorry to be so late getting back to you, Tisha! I was away from the computer for a while. To answer your question: I've been told that parents are reading What If Everybody Understood Child Development. Even tho written for teachers, they're getting something from it. Hope that helps!
