TOTALLY. and that's why it guts me (depending on how i'm doing on that creativity front at the time, heh 😅) really wonderful when storytellers take on those *specifically* relatable challenges and make something beautiful for us.

also grateful for this one! good call, Maria!

yes but there’s that one scene near the end (where she struggles to summon the ability that used to come so easily when it’s needed to save the day) effs. me. up.

maybe time for a rewatch…

I think at the end of the day, people forget that the sff scene is propelled by mostly unpaid labour.

And presses and editors still need to eat. You know, thrive.

But people always forget that.

I have been felled today by a bank errand that proved to be just as much of a hassle as I imagined it would be (which is why I didn't do it earlier). Took me out.
This is Why I'll Never be an Adult

This list didn’t include: simultaneously preparing work samples for an Arts Grant application, providing childcare for a 6yo while parents were in hospital with her twin, navigating a new work relationship with boys who want to make video games with me, plus general maintenance of home + human body

Overcome my great distaste for book promotion and marketing and try to see it as ways to let friends and fans know I have new, cool work out that I’m excited for them to read. Look.

I DID THAT.

Familiarize myself with independent publishing options and choose one to try. Suppress my keen sense of injustice that distribution through established retailers for a 5 buck ebook, I’d get 2.97, on a 15 buck POD print I’d get 1.82 per sale. Tell myself it’s worth it if readers find it. I DID THAT.

Spend October finalizing page design, cover design and illustration in unfamiliar programs. I’d made the switch from Adobe to Affinity (no regrets) but had to relearn stuff. Also had to use Calibre to convert Affinity PDF to EPUB, then clean up the code in the crappy conversion in Sigil. I DID THAT.

Spend all of September joyfully stripping out the “love triangle” I’d been pressured to add and replacing it with fleshing out the friendship relationships. Also, restructuring the ending so the events “unfolded” instead of the hasty Scooby-Doo “it was him the whole time!” reveal. I DID THAT.
