An expired IPAWS digital certificate prevented radio stations from receiving FEMA’s IPAWS Required Weekly Test (RWT) on Monday.

The FCC has released its latest count of broadcast station licenses, providing the totals as of the end of December 2025.

The number of AM stations in the United States has dropped by 7% in a decade, while noncom FMs have increased 16%. Translators and boosters soared 36%.

The security of communications infrastructure was the focus of a speech by FCC Commissioner Olivia Trusty at the Hudson Institute this week. 🔒

Four alleged radio pirates in the greater New York City area each face a possible $20,000 fine from the FCC.

In each case, the FCC cited a single day in January of last year when it detected on-air broadcasts, though in least two of these cases the broadcasts appear to have been going on for years.

Previously, some HF experimental licensees were able to transmit without identifying by utilizing waivers.

However, in letters issued to licensees on Dec. 17, the FCC emphasized strict adherence to the ID rule, through either clear voice or Morse code.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting announced that its board of directors voted to dissolve the organization after 58 years.

The decision followed Congress’ rescission of its federal funding. CPB had still been operating with around 30 staff members.

A group of AM station owners has asked the FCC to reopen the 2016 filing window and allow more AMs to acquire and relocate translators. 📡

Class C and Class D AM broadcasters dominate the coalition. If they have their way, the "window" also would become permanent.

Large radio groups have historically been nearly unanimous in their support of relaxing the FCC's ownership caps that limit the number of stations a single company can own in a single market.

Now, some small market broadcasters are also in agreement.
