That's why I really liked the first Ciaphas Cain novel, since it shows that some level of diplomacy *is* exercised in the setting, even if it does end up being a factional war in the end. Despite being a xenophobe, Cain himself isn't a barking mad racist, just kinda mostly harmless in his ignorance.

"Something from beyond" was guiding humanity into accepting him as a messianic figure, which where the continuing story would've gone. Like a slightly more optimistic/humanist version of Go Nagai's Devilman.

Yeah, but it was pretty grounded at first, since it was a bunch of POVs (crime/delinquent stories) about how the main hero ended up with his many sidekicks. The only weird thing was they all had dreams guiding them to him, the twist being that the main isn't responsible for the dreams.

Heh. I got a unfulfilled superhero book too, but it was a high school piece about 20 years old now (AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH). Of course this was high school me still figuring out what stories clicked for me, so it was just a bunch of weird pulp vignettes strung together.
