I recognized the building Anor and I approached. It was within sight of where the ritual had taken place. The magnificent marble structure was surrounded by oaks with an undisturbed moat zigzagging between them. A single stone bridge led into a garden filled with columns depicting the Seven watching over the forests of Anthor. We entered the hall and into a windowed corridor with a single path leading further in. Anor and I walked side by side down the ruby carpeted path. There was complete silence as our footsteps were hushed by the rug below our feet. We elves were naturally quiet, but even our own movements could not escape our keen sense.

“Then what do you feel?” I asked, returning the weapon to its sheath. “Shame, more with each word you speak. Knowing what one of our own has been through and how it continues to impede his ability to live. But what I feel, Racthoh, cannot compare to what you have endured. Know that. None of us is without fault, even those who hold authority, especially someone like Anor. Can you see then how it is meaningless to point the finger towards those at fault? In that same regard, it is meaningless to place blame upon yourself for what you have done in the past. Expectations lead to disappointment, false security.”

I would need to rely on the druids. While many elves received their strength and magic from the Seven, there were others who looked to the harmony of nature. Life will always endure. An abandoned mill would be overrun with the touch of nature in a matter of months. Weeds could navigate their way through stone. In that understanding of how ecosystems could thrive in whatever circumstances were thrown at them, the druids find their studies. By combining the gifts of our Gods and the strength of nature’s endurance, the druids could mend almost any ailment that befell us.

I stood before the creature. He spoke no words but shuffled to his knees, bowing his head before me as some kind of repentance. All around me, the world slowed to a crawl. There were sounds, cries in the air, but their meaning was lost to me. There was but a singular purpose before me. I hoisted the blade high above me with both hands, staring down before my victim as my arms trembled and legs started to give way. I paused. I closed my eyes. I plunged the blade through and into the ground below. I felt my heart stop. I felt my breath slow. I felt not pain but relief as my body tore itself apart, unable to contain the awesome power unleashed by the singular act. It was a serene feeling.

Off in the distance, I finally spotted a single vessel approaching us on the port side. It was trouble, and of that I was sure. There were colors upon the sails, those of the Order, but it made no sense at this time of the day, and it headed in our direction. I didn’t trust it, not for a moment. There were others hidden somewhere in the foggy evening, and the sound of the sea could not hide them. I suspected they were circling us in an attempt to get behind the other vessels in our fleet. There were other animated Paladins in that audience, others that escaped and were able to relay a message back to their undead master.

Tyrinal was much like his master, Alfrost, strictly keeping to the school of Legacy. However, she had no interest in bringing back a loved one to have one last moment with them or to see a friend one last time. She specialized in raising her fellow disciples of Phandra, those who were adept in the other two schools. Her depth of understanding was so great that not only were her minions able to perform at their absolute peak, but she was able to absorb the information into herself. Complete and absolute mastery of all three schools of necromancy was at her disposal. A master sailor, ruthless with a sword, mace, or halberd, and a genius alchemist, Alfrost was the true jack of all trades. She even conquered death, granting immortality to her dearest disciples, the closest of all being Tyrinal himself.

Before us stood four decayed arboreal structures reaching far into the skies, lost among the thick fog. Arranged somewhat in a semi-circle, a single trail of water ran through the second and third. Fall-colored leaves littered the dusty ground, and, surprisingly, life-filled branches swayed in the wind, creaking as the gales passed through. The first from the right was hollowed out at the base.

On and on it went. Some begged for mercy, for their children and spouses to be spared, and for their loved ones to run as fast as they could. Crying as they told their friends to hide. Weeping as they prayed for intervention. Anger was fuming in others. Where were the Paladins? Damning the temple, cursing the Krale and the necromancers alike. Why them, why, why, repeated in their misery. I looked upon the child once more. “Mommy, daddy ... I ... I can’t see you,” she sobbed as her hands began to viciously gouge at her own eyes.

The scream was agony, piercing, unbearable agony. It was as if the minotaur was reliving every moment of pain it had ever experienced, and at a magnitude far greater than its initial infliction. The flesh began to bubble and burst around Tyrinal's hands as the horns began to swell and grow outwards. Its eyes sizzled and steamed. Its legs were frantically yearning to run on the ground. The minotaur grabbed hold of a horn with each hand once they grew within reach of his struggling arms. In what had to have been desperation, the creature tore his own skull in two. The body collapsed to the floor, hands locked in death around the swollen horns still attached to one half of the skull each.

Most of the undead had been silenced and dispatched during the carnage of the battle. In those moments of observing Bedlam, I noticed the animated bodies did not bleed red. It was black. I thought nothing of it originally, assuming it was the necromancy festering within their bodies over countless days, weeks, or possibly months. But as the moments continued to pass, there was a foul, sulfurous smell overtaking the salty odor of the sea. It was not corruption swimming in their maligned bodies; it was oil. The oil had been seeping out and covering the bodies of Krale, Paladins, and the entirety of our ship’s deck.

The fog gave way, and a morning sun revealed a youthful landscape off in the distance. Trees stood tall and dense, rising above the rocky shore that was welcoming our weary craft. The song of the open ocean had reached its conclusion, allowing a windswept melody to provide much-needed relief.

Inside each cabin was nothing spectacular. There were four beds occupying much of the floor space, adorned with the hides of elk, bear, and wolf. The floor itself was also littered with the skins. Proofs of previous kills were hung along the wall, with future space for other trophy kills. A singular table with three chairs suggested that the occupants did not all occupy a meal together, and rotting scraps near the beds at least meant the building was sealed well enough to prevent rodents from sneaking in.
