That is very cool! It's such a shame that the people who actually solved the riddle weren't the first to find it

Amid my mixed feelings, I'll always have a soft spot for Kit Williams' work, due to a childhood spent going to his exhibitions every year.

I agree with @drfernriddell.bsky.social: the Masquerade hare should be bought by a museum for the nation.

You can see more of his work here on his website /Fin

Despite Kit Williams' obsession with painting young, slim, naked women, I still think his work is astounding. The imagination and the skill!

Look at the way he paints moonlight in Hunter's Moon (2008). He makes all the frames himself and the end of the bow that threads through this one. /5

He claimed he was interested in all human bodies, but that the only people who wanted to buy paintings of naked men were gay men. He then said they preferred to buy from other gay men and could tell he wasn't gay. Make of that what you will 4/

Pretty much all his paintings featured young naked women - there were a select few who modelled for him. Shamefully I didn't include his answer as to why in my piece /3

I interviewed Kit Williams when I was a student journalist. He made me promise not to reveal where he lived, ashe didn't want Masquerade fans knocking at his door.

He said he hated the attention that had come with the hunt and instead wanted to discuss paintings of his that had caught my eye /2

(I know that quote doesn't seem like it's related to the topic, but it sums up Nigeria in so many ways and it'll make sense if you read the whole thing)

That is very true! And we're still seeing how that will evolve in this coalition era & beyond. But I agree that right now it's definitely preferable

Although I should caveat this by saying I haven't covered a budget in the UK for about a decade and never for national media

It all feels controlled and professional in comparison.
