#tdih 1967, Julian Bond was finally sworn in as a member of Georgia House of Reps -- after a two year battle to claim his ELECTED seat.

In 1965, House had refused to seat Bond because of his statements (on behalf of SNCC) in opposition to Vietnam War. ⬇️ 🧵

Here in this speech, “The Challenge of the Seventies,” delivered upon the opening of the LB Johnson Library at the University of Texas, Julian Bond does not hold back. He describes the 1972 election as “the mvt of the comfortable, callous and smug against the … forgotten and I represented.” 2/

Following his death in 2015, Alice Walker wrote this poem in memory of Julian Bond. Today, on what would have been his 85th birthday, I post it here.

#tdih 1966, Georgia State House refused to seat Julian Bond despite his election (82% of vote) as a state rep, because of his endorsement of SNCC statement against U.S. in Vietnam.

They denied Bond & the voters their rights. #VoterSuppression

While fighting for his elected seat, Julian Bond wrote a comic book (graphic history) about the Vietnam War that made connection between struggles of the Vietnamese and of African Americans for self-determination and human rights.
