It's a mix of looking at the skeletal remains, looking at professionals' reconstruction, and my knowledge of extant animal anatomy. Theropods, for example, are similar to birds, so it makes sense to give them similar shapes/features of living birds.

I had to look it up to check my spelling (I am a fake wing fan... 😔) and found this diagram, specifying that the fleshy bit in the elbow is the propatagium and the fleshy bit outside the elbow is the postpatagium. I guess technically the hydraulic tube is the propatagiac ligament?
