I draw and paint a lot.
(I did a drawing a day in 2024.)
This year I’m listening to records and drawing little pictures of the covers.
The most fun to draw this time were probably the Pixies and Air albums.
The most difficult: Firebyrd by Gene Clark.

Firebyrd
Takoma, 1984
I got this yesterday. Listening now. I was slightly worried by things I’d read that it might be a bit slick and soulless - but so far it is sounding very good. A couple of the songs faded out too quickly… otherwise, no complaints.

Lots of them were difficult to draw this time - including the three ex-Beatles.
I loved hearing most of them but there are two albums I don’t want to hear again…

So Rebellious A Lover, 1987
I’ve wanted this album for years but it always cost too much for the LP - so today I got the CD.
Fantastic that Gene’s last released album was such an inspired collaboration.
Timeless songs, great performances, sympathetic production.

Featuring Gene Clark
City, 1980
A new (to me) album.
I always want to hear dismissed albums by great musicians and I liked the LP that they made shortly before this.
Based on one listen I like it!
Gene is demoted due to his unreliable ways. His two songs sound great.

I photocopied a tonal version then hand-painted/collaged/inked/pencilled in over each of them.

It was only after I’d heard about seven of them that I read it was Neil’s 80th birthday this week! Coincidence? (Yes.)
The most fun to draw was ‘Sleeps With Angels’ and the most difficult was ‘The Monsanto Years.’

Interesting to hear a direct reference to Sid’s line of work from the first episode, while also directly contradicting Hancock’s own situation as it was previously established.

I was very pleased with the squashed Neil Young face in the corner of ‘American Stars ‘n Bars’.

Hancock’s getting big headed due to his new status as a radio star so his friends come up with a plan which massively backfires.
I hadn’t expected such mad consequences. Galton & Simpson make the most of the format with some brilliant images being conjured up.

I was surprised that it serves as an introduction to the Sidney James character - he’s never met Hancock before the episode.

So I’ve decided to listen to all the existing Hancock radio episodes in order, along with the re-made ones.

American English, 1987
I taped ‘Building A Bridge to Your Heart’ off the radio when I was 11.
Yesterday I finally heard the LP (bought on Friday.)
‘Bug in the Machine’ stood out: the only song sung by Gouldman. Reminiscent of New Order?
I feel sorry for that cover model.

I made the mistake of listening to this while feeling uneasy this morning… my anxiety increased with each track.
Only Harold Budd's piece made me feel a bit better.
(& my heart sinks when I get a CD off the shelf and realise it's a water-damaged one.)

The CD is one of my most treasured - it was an amazing thing when it was released, to hear so many previously unknown Bill songs.
