When I was in the third grade, I had a friend named Lois Levinson, and she was my pal. One day I began to notice this buzz around school: Somebody was a Jew. I didn't understand what was going on. Then I heard words like kike and Yid, things like that. Suddenly... out of the blue, in class, Lois stood up and said, "My name is Lois Levinson, and I'm a Jew... and I'm proud of it," she said. Very bold, very brave but very confusing to me. So I ran home, and at the dinner table I said, "Hey, what am I?" My dad said, "What do you mean?" I said, "Today Lois Levinson got up and said she was a Jew. What am I?" My dad said, "You're a Jew." I said, "What?" I thought my life was over... and I was devastated... I ran to my room and was in there awhile before he came in and said, "Look, I told you that to make a point." It made a huge impact on me. From then on I was going to defend anybody in that position.

If you posses the ability to compose a working & concise AI prompt, then you have the ability to stretch a canvas, prime it, create a grisaille layer, and complete your master painting. But, if you prefer an instant result, from the copper brain of a grok, rather than the result of your composition being drug through deep artistic fears, the struggles you have with value and chroma, the coffee or bar shots with friends/collegues after unearthing psychological landmines revealed by your paint process- then, by all means, behave like a little boy playing in the backyard dirt, verbalizing their purile wishes... and, along with your cotton-candy-edged finished image, include your artists' artwork statement of "I was impatient so I asked asked a computer." When I look at AI generated art, I see that the human pain and struggles have been removed, like the giblets of a holiday turkey.

I never really looked for happiness, feeling it to be a wasted effort— for so many had tried and failed... that it was not something that could be found in that manner. In those times when I realized happiness was present, I didn't recognize what action of mine had brought it near. But, later in life, when I had lost the hunger of the never-ending search for happiness, and I turned instead to doing what I love every single day, with no expectations, and no weather eye to a non-existent happiness horizon— happiness came and sat next to me. As I continued doing what I loved, I recognized that satisfaction flowed within me— and that, still, happiness sat nearby... staring at that elixir within me. Until that time, I had never realized that happiness is something to which you feed bits of satisfaction on a daily basis! "Ghost Ranch, Abiquiu, NM" Oil/canvas, 2026 24" x 30" [Artist statement in the photo alt text]
This painting started with a fantastical mental vision I had while looking at the front porch of Georgia O'Keeffe's Abiquiu NM home (September 27th, 2024)- thinking of her 98yo+/- spirit/ghost still looking out the window while I looked in, the distant landscape reflecting in the sectioned window panes. The vision echoed in my thoughts until I decided it might make a challenging painting to create. As with all my paintings, I began mentally rearranging the basic elements (the aparation, porch, window, and reflected landscape) long before I ever sketched out a composition (in this case, the mental composing lasted about 14 months before starting the canvas). It was during these thought compositions that I brought her beloved Cerro Pedernal mesa into the reflection, and then decided that the reflection would actually be one of her paintings of that mesa => which lead to the thought of pairing/layering her style of precisionsim to my divergent version of precisionism. The porch used in the artwork was not her 'home' porch, but rather the porch from reference historical photos, probably the porch of a building in the 'ranch' area of the Abiquiu property. The last part of my mental composing was to edit down the number of elements (keeping the compositional goal ,yet easing the viewing burden). During that refinement I also realized the conceptual similarity of this work to that of M.C. Escher's "Three Worlds" etching. Georgia's Precisionism focuses on the form/shape (outer edge) and segmentations, whereas my Precisionism is emergent from the chaotic inner elements, so that the sum of elemental probabilities coalesce into a larger cohesive and easy to discern shapes/forms (inner constituent parts). This was, from beginning to completion, a fun and meaningful creation of art and compositional philosophy, whose learned benfits extended my creative envelope.
