I visited Kragelund Mose yesterday - one of the most ambitious rewilding areas in Denmark judged by functional diversity of large herbivores.
The horses come in a variety of colours because Exmoor and Konik ponies area alowed to interbreed. The mares happily grabbed the chance!

Nice try Thise, but what we really need is milk from cows staying together with their own calf for six months and outside the stable in real grassland under the open sky. I am sure it can be done!

Danmarks strategi for bæredygtig energi bygger i høj grad på biomasse. Det er et blålys, fordi det ikke mindsker udledningen af kuldioxid.
Og så har det den uheldige bivirkning, at det skaber økonomisk incitament til at ødelægge naturskove i hele verden - også i DK. Det sker med åbne øjne.

Danmarks strategi for bæredygtig energi bygger i høj grad på biomasse. Det er et blålys, fordi det ikke mindsker udledningen af kuldioxid.
Og så har det den uheldige bivirkning, at det skaber økonomisk incitament til at ødelægge naturskove i hele verden - også i DK. Det sker med åbne øjne.

Europe is severely defaunated, and while there are definitely too many deer (fallow deer is not exotic) in many places, there are also too few elephants, aurochs and horses.
We should target natural ecosystems (see photo), not vigorous tree growth.

Biodiversity is a misleading goal for conservation. Just look at this low-diverse Danish dune landscape.
The primary target should be the unhindered unfolding of life on Earth, to be achieved by protected areas with restored ecosystems.

Biodiversity is a misleading goal for conservation. Just look at this low-diverse Danish dune landscape.

1) Reintroduction of a variety of large land mammals
2) Fenced reserves to minimise conflicts over natural densities
3) Legalisation of natural dying, particularly starvation
It is so simple. The barrier is mental, not practical.

It is full-blown shifting baseline to ridicule the reintroduction of elephants to European protected areas.
Elephants have been keystone species of European ecosystems continuously for 18 million years. They have only been absent in 0.01 million years.
Disregarding elephants is counterfactual.

Det er 5 år siden, jeg skrev om afbrændingen af skovenes naturværdier i @weekendavisen.dk, og det er ikke blevet en tøddel mindre aktuelt i de forløbne år. Det er svært at være bæredygtig, det er meget lettere at lade som om.

Det er 5 år siden, jeg skrev om afbrændingen af skovenes naturværdier i @weekendavisen.dk, og det er ikke blevet en tøddel mindre aktuelt i de forløbne år. Det er svært at være bæredygtig, det er meget lettere at lade som om.

Over a span of 80 years this milking girl was replaced by milking robots and the cows locked inside stables. The Danish record cow yielded 207.000 liter milk after giving birth to 17 calves, none of which the cow was allowed to nurse.
Unless we free the cows and calves, dairy is a lost cause.

I discovered them during af 3 months retreat in the spring. One remnant population each, less than 10 individual plants, growing in a wild lawn, two grassland sites and a road verge.

A spruce forest in Tatra Mountains after a bark beetle attack.
Wonderful to see spontanous regrowth, but also immensely sad to observe the consequences of a complete absence of megaherbivores. Future will bring no forest glades, just utter darkness. It would be so easy to rewild cattle and horses!

The biodiversity crisis is not mitigated by planting trees
- it is mitigated when we stop logging trees.
Planting and logging supports forestry, not biodiversity. Self-grown forests and ancient trees support biodiversity, not forestry. Simple as that.
