I've had to live through difficult times, yes, homeless or in "whereabouts unknown" circumstances because of financial downturns and other misfortunes.
Living with cancer for the past 20 years may have soured me a bit? Forgive me.

Mine does it too. Others I cared for did it too; some would simply shove it out of their dish, being very messy about it.
