When Fiore’s body started to masculinise during puberty, she saw a doctor, who asked what sex she would like to be.

Fiore was assigned female at birth, but from a young age, had complex feelings about her gender, saying "I prefer[ed] to borrow my brother’s shorts – they were far too big, even with my father’s old belt – and I used to walk around like that, pretending to do pipi like him." (2/6)

I admit I (Alice) was dubious when Jasmine told me before recording that she was going to pitch the idea of Genly as a trans woman, but I have come around! It's such a rich book that there's so much with regard to Genly's backstory and gender that Le Guin only gives us a glimpse of.
