As someone who lives in a red state, they’re so far distanced from the reality of situations like this that they convince themselves it couldn’t possibly be true. Or if it is true, then they probably deserved it. There’s always an excuse for why they don’t have to confront the inhumanity.

One of the things that radicalized me was learning that prisoners were just locked in their cells with no supplies and left to die when Hurricane Katrina rolled through. They don’t care that the “vermin” are going to die.
