I have always been sickened by violence. I have never understood why people want to watch it. But here I am, after half a century of life, *reveling* in watching a slow mo video of that insufferable stinkypoo having his STUPID face smashed in. This is genuinely uplifting.

I once went for dinner at a shellfish restaurant with a bunch of aquaculture MSc students and once you've watched 12 nerds gleefully dissect their dinner and compare notes on which parasitic nematodes and isopods are present in what mollusc lobes you'll be glad you've been vegetarian since the 90s.

yes, well said - I don't believe abusers are *always* aware of the full extent of suffering they are inflicting, quite the opposite (for all the reasons you state)
My point was merely that the ability to feel for others isn't a magic cure for abuse - deliberate cruelty is a thing that exists.

I think it has little to do with empathy and everything to do with *caring* and the desire to do no harm.
Empathy is the ability to put yourself in another person's position and understand/ predict their experience. Abusers can be empathetic, that's how they know how to hurt their victim.

We live in a country where people with average incomes at 50 can't afford even a dingy hovel in any of the main population centres (i.e. the places where jobs actually are) unless they are partnered up with someone with another income. And where those aged 30 have to share rooms with strangers.
