It's here, the final chapter of my modern AU~ I had a lot of fun writing this all, and just having a cute little fluffy AU! (also my first ever completed longfic c:)

Gale looks around the garden in shock. The area near the outdoor table they'd often sit at is decorated with lights and garlands, and a covering provides some shade from the sun without depriving the rest of the garden of light. The table has a variety of food laid out—"I didn't cook it," Laurent quickly adds when Gale gives him a dubious look—and in the center was a box, which Laurent picks up. "I wanted to say…" He flips open the lid somewhat dramatically, revealing a sweet-smelling cake adorned with candied lemons. "Happy anniversary." "I… oh?" Gale doesn't hide the shock on his face, looking between the cake and his partner in confusion. "What anniversary…" Laurent chuckles at Gale's confusion. I imagine I looked the same a few months ago.

Thancred pounds on the door to the diner. "Gale, I know you're in there! You forgot to unlock the door! Open up!" When the door remains closed, Thancred gives a dejected sigh. "…I'm hungry, how am I supposed to get through the day without my curry…" "Perhaps if you told Gale you liked his cooking instead of harassing him, he might pack you some leftovers when he takes a day off." Y'shtola holds back a chuckle when Thancred lets out another dramatic sigh. "I pay him, isn't that enough of a compliment?" Y'shtola scoffs. "I don't see how he hasn't poisoned you yet—I know I would have."

"HADES…" A cacophony of voices come from the blinding beam, mixing in with the growled snarl from the Warrior, but he can only fixate on one voice in particular. One he hadn't heard in thousands of years. "No… it can't be…!" Emet-Selch stares at the light with shaded eyes. "This world is not yours to end." Kris affixes Emet with a glare—one all too familiar with those damnedable clear green eyes. "This is their world. Their story." Emet can tell from Kris's lip movements that he isn't saying what he hears, but it was the owner of the voice that was of greater concern. "Let go of the past. Haven't you made them suffer enough? Can't you see how you have become those you despise the most?" Emet-Selch growls at Hecate—or her reincarnation, rather. "You are a broken husk, nothing more!" He clenches his hands into tight fists, and a visage of rage twists his features. "Damn you… damn you, Hecate…!" Kris continues to level his gaze at him—clear, determined, and full of contempt. "I challenge you today, Hades." Emet no longer hears Hecate's voice mixed in with Kris's, her way of saying she has let go. The Warrior of Darkness raises his hand, and belatedly he hears the Exarch behind him chanting a spell. Too late to stop it, an aetherical greatsword manifests, and Kris takes it in hand. "It ends this day. One way or another, it ends." "You're quite empathetic. Perhaps too much so." The captain sighs, returning his gaze to the medics. "Not everyone is meant to fight, Benjamin." "…I don't understand what you mean…" Benjamin looks down at the ground. Is he… is he trying to send me away? Is he saying—"that I'm not good enough? After what happened? You want me to walk away—" "You seem to have a habit of putting words in people's mouths." The captain sighs again, annoyance clear in his voice. "Not everyone is meant to fight on the frontlines, Benjamin. You see him?" He gestures toward the medic captain, who is gesturing to one of the drivers in an armed vehicle to move somewhere else. "Gale's not much of a fighter, either. But he does what he can—even if sometimes he does too much." "You know them—um, him, Captain Elja?" "I know most of the captains, but Gale…" He trails off, but Benjamin understands his meaning. "O-oh. I wouldn't think you'd—" "Don't finish that." Captain Elja huffs, though he no longer sounds annoyed. "I've watched you—well, all of you. You can defend yourself in a normal fight… but out on the battlefield, you'd just panic and die. That accomplishes nothing. There are different ways for you to help." "I see…" Benjamin watches the medic, lost in thought. Perhaps I could be a medic, like them? There were some conjurers, after all… "Before you can have the cake, I need to teach you how…" Laurent balances the book in one hand as he sidesteps Katerina's attempt to grab the plate from him. "…How to become a proper lady when entertaining guests." Katerina plops down in the chair, crossing her arms with a pout. "I don't want to." "Then you won't get any cake. And Daddy will give the rest to the neighbors." "That's not fair!" It's not, but… Laurent doesn't voice his agreement, and instead sits across from Kat. "Alright. When you come to the table, you sit up with your back straight…" He unconsciously straightens his back as he continues. "…Take the napkin and place it on your lap, then wait patiently for the first course to be served." Kat doesn't move, continuing to glare at Laurent. He remains silent, holding her gaze until Katerina growls and kicks her feet under the table in a huff. "FINE." She sits up (sort of) straight and drapes the napkin over her legs (technically), and while Katerina still looks angry, she doesn't lunge at the plates and waits for Laurent to continue. "Good girl. Now…" Laurent skims over the next section of the book and frowns. "Let's see… 'Polite Conversations for A Dinner Party'?" Laurent taps his temple as he keeps reading the section, focusing solely on the book. "Who would want to talk during a dinner party? It's dinner, you're there to eat… and it's rude to talk with food in your mouth. I'll just skip this—" Laurent flips through some pages, but his ears twitch as Katerina quietly giggles. "What's funny—" He lifts his head to look at Kat, but she's no longer sitting across from him, and the plates are gone. "Hey!" He looks around, but Katerina has already made off with her prize. He sits down with a huff. "I guess she knows how to be quiet and patient after all." Did she really need to take my slice too…? "Would you move already!?" Alisaie tries to push past the Viera blocking the door, but he doesn't move, arms crossed. "Kris is resting." "He's been resting for a week now!" She opts to try and pull Laurent out of the way instead, which is also ineffective. "How do we know he's not dead in there or something!?" "That's rather morbid." Laurent gently removes his arm from Alisaie's grip. "I know you're worried, but he needs to rest. He almost didn't make it, not even Kris can bounce back that quickly from his wounds." "I know! I know, but…" Alisaie's words trail off, dropping her gaze and her bravado as silence fills the hallway. Laurent looks at her sympathetically for a moment, before scoffing and waving his hand. "Too bad you're not strong enough to get past me." "What–!?" Alisaie's head snaps back up, fury rekindled. "How dare you!? I'll show you strength–" She begins pushing and pulling at Laurent again, trying to knock him off balance so she can claim victory over this infuriating man (the initial reason for getting to the door forgotten). After a moment, the door opens. "If I was dead, you two would be loud enough to rouse me back to life, surely." Kris looks at them, leaning on the door frame for support. "What is going on out here?"

"Have you not been grilled about our relationship—or lack thereof? I think I've heard everyone's opinions about it by now." O-oh… has it been that obvious? Laurent sips his water, unsure of how to respond. Of course it has, who am I kidding… They talk a bit about the 'situation' their neighbors put them in, but Laurent muddled through the conversation, unable to focus. Eventually, though, a sudden feeling of melancholy washes over him. But why does everyone care… He sets the empty glass down and stares at it. "I've been here a long time, and everyone here—you, too—has been so nice to me. But I don't get why… I'm not good at talking to people. I usually seem… unfriendly." "Seems you're doing a fine job of talking right now. I don't think it's the alcohol, either." Gale gives him a soft, genuine smile. "People are nice to people they like, that's all. You are quite likable—even if sometimes the way you say things aren't perfect—and doesn't hurt that you're handsome to boot."

"Talk about what?" Laurent's tone was laced with anxiety, and Gale turned to look at him. What indeed… His eyes wander to Laurent's lips for the briefest of moments before looking back up. Hell. Seems I'm more tipsy than I thought. Gale waves the question away, as much to distract himself as to assuage the other's concerns. "Have you not been grilled about our relationship—or lack thereof? "Laurent… how did you manage to do this?" Gale coughs as he fans dark smoke out of the back of the diner. "All you were doing was mixing the batter…" "I didn't know the stovetop would be hot…" Gale tries to sigh, but coughs again after breathing in more of the smoke. "I was making a glaze! You can't do that with a cold burner. Did you really put the whole bundle of lavender on top of it!?" "…Maybe…" …I might strangle this man. Laurent had mentioned to Gale that he didn't cook a few times, but he thought it was only due to a lack of experience. As it turned out, the florist was the most accident-prone cook he'd met in his life.
