Professor Fairley was a pioneer in the fields of chemotherapy and immunotherapy, and his visionary work laid the foundations for decades of world-leading oncology research at Barts and Queen Mary's – including Professor Powles'. (4/4)

The medal commemorates the life of Gordon Hamilton Fairley, the first Professor of Medical Oncology in England, who built a world-leading oncology unit at Barts Hospital. Tragically, Professor Fairley's life was cut short by a terrorist bomb in London in 1975 at the age of 45. (3/4)
