Though from your descriptions of a slightly more rural environs, I'm guessing these books skipped straight past those trends

Legitimately podcasts, substacks & even microblogging sites have been great as recommendation generators.

With not too much effort, it's much easier to find people with both broader & more refined versions of your tastes now
