Context on our recent paywall decisions, from the Puzzmo discord:
Andrew: Hi everyone, I have a rare announcement to share from the business side of Puzzmo. Starting soon some of you will notice a stricter paywall. Cross|word, Flipart, and Circuits will remain free/ad-supported for the foreseeable future, but players who have completed more than 150 total games will need to start a free trial or subscribe to maintain access to the other daily games. This was a big decision, but it’s true to the site’s origins and our values. Since the first line of code was written for Puzzmo five years ago we have had subscribers at the top of our minds. As a team, we try to put most of our effort into experimental games, the archive, and leaderboards - all of which are subscriber-only features that make membership really valuable and Puzzmo as a whole something we feel good about making and selling. Earlier this year we made the choice to remove video ads to keep the site performant and to eliminate the many bugs and issues that come along with video ad tech. Video ads are how a lot of games companies like ours make money, but to make Puzzmo work better as a business and to enable our small team to... Andrew, continued: ... focus on improving the site (instead of squeezing more ad revenue) we are choosing to emphasize subscription with this change to how our paywall works. As always, thanks for playing! Zach: Some more info from my perspective: When we decided to turn off video ads we did it because we knew they were ruining Puzzmo for players. We made that decision while also understanding that we probably wouldn't be able to find a revenue source to replace them. Today when I look around the internet I see two kinds of sites: sites with no paywall that have turned into a bees nest of ad ornamentation, scraping their way towards profit, and beautiful sites I love (like the verge, or 404 media) with light ads and hard paywalls. I know which kind of site I want Puzzmo to be, and today's change is an experiment in that direction.
