I finished reading! Like his conclusion, I can't say I agree with everything here, but there is good advice that I want to try out on my next... thumbnails? uuoooghh... I'm a little behind schedule, huh...

I thought like this until recently. I think you do have to feel unsatisfied to keep growing. But it isn't bad to stop and look back and say it's a job well done.

???

...I really need to start reading JoJo. If just to understand what that last note even means

"...losing interest in the world means losing the ability to come up with ideas."

I feel as though I've long since lost interest in the world, yet I can still come up with ideas. So perhaps I haven't yet.

"Know how a gun works to draw it"
...yeah. I spent a funny amount of time looking up gun safety for like 3 panels. Thankfully modern modeling tech also makes life a bit easier

I found the hemingway passage! ...was it translated differently in JP because it doesn't seem to illustrate the point he's making...

It sure is! Haha, I do think he says this from his heart so I try to understand it from a pov of wanting to succeed. But this point is so... bizarre that I don't agree and maybe that's why it all works.

Tho, of this, it might be because I'm a bigger fan of Pixar movie format? But maybe I'm completely misunderstanding. Perhaps rather than "failure" I'm thinking of "hardship"?

Hmmm... 🤔

A chief complaint from people is that shounen stories where the hero only wins, and barely needs to lift a finger to do so is boring. I also find it much more interesting to see a hero fail, deal with that failure, and rise back up.

Pretty interesting that I don't agree at all with what Araki is saying in this chapter: that (shounen) manga is ever positive. That the hero must not fail or fail to his own mistakes. Perhaps because this book was published 10 years ago, I feel like that's really outdated thinking.

I didn't want to write in my book so a million post its it is. Good night.

Most thought provoking thing I've learned:
1980's $450 = 2017's $1200

inflation's a damn bitch

okay seeing glaring Jotaro in cool posing with the notes "neutral expression for his cool character" "massive body to show fantasy" "high school uniform for normalcy"
is taking me out 🤣

"Heroes fight alone" 🤔 but teamwork makes the dream work. ...Is this perhaps where eastern and western stories differ?

Wait. Did he just spoil Steel Ball Run for me as an example?

I still tried to straighten out the setting and rules of that world for one of them, but... man, there were a lot of things my childhood self did not consider lol. Like. An ending.

The stories I used to want to tell don't really work with this modern world, or this adult version of myself.

I had 3 btw. Two of which were started and published online a long time ago, but life and school got in the way.
