🚗⚡ New in @science.org: My piece on why the U.S. needs to rethink its approach to China's electric vehicle industry (and what's at stake if it doesn’t).

The competitive gap is bigger than you think. Thread 🧵

New, from me: Marco Rubio used to boast that he was banned from China, calling it a totalitarian state.

Now he combines a) new surveillance capabilities to monitor and punish international students, with b) little accountability or due process. 🧵

As someone who has reported on AI for 7 years and covered China tech as well, I think the biggest lesson to be drawn from DeepSeek is the huge cracks it illustrates with the current dominant paradigm of AI development. A long thread. 1/

I wrote about how American and Chinese internet users are accidentally cobbling together a techno-utopian version of the “global village,” even if it’s unlikely to last.

While Chinese users know when to self-censor, Americans don’t. On Xiaohongshu aka RedNote, they ask about the Ukraine War, the Chinese govt, gay people.

In the comments, some local users reminded the newcomers not to discuss “politics, religion, and drugs.”

A few more thoughts on Trump and the dollar. Probably this is sound and fury, signifying nothing except Trump's ignorance. But to the extent it matters, it's utterly counterproductive 1/
It goes without saying that this is stupid, and I wonder what set it off. Was there a segment on Fox News? But I thought it might be worth a thread explaining what Trump (and, to be fair, some other international leaders) don't get about international money 1/
