my old roommate used to be suuuuuper into this to the point of giving paid video lessons haha, other replies have pretty much nailed it but the 2 big things that helped for me:
- keeping a dream journal and updating it consistently
- regular reality checks

sketched this one out last fall during a downtempo/ambient party at a local arts space then painted about 90% of it over the course of a few live painting gigs at raves.. finally got around to finishing it up over the last couple days hehe
