Passage from We Can Build You that reminds me of at least one high-profile late-capitalist grifter. Alt-text for anyone who, understandably, ain’t gonna read that.
I gaped at Barrows, not knowing whether to believe him; was this serious? Simulacra posing as human colonists, living on the Moon in order to create an illusion of prosperity? Man, woman and child simulacra in little living rooms, eating phony dinners, going to phony bathrooms... it was horrible. It was a way of bailing this man out of the troubles he had run into; did we want to hang our fortunes and lives onto that? Maury sat puffing away miserably on his cigar; he was no doubt thinking along the lines I was. And yet I could see Barrows's position. He had to persuade people in the mass that emigration to the Moon was desirable; his economic holdings hinged on it. And perhaps the end justified the means. The human race had to conquer its fear, its squeamishness, and enter an alien environment for the first time in its history. This might help entice it; there was comfort in solidarity. Heat and air domes protecting the great tracts would be built... living would not be physically bad - it was only the psychological reality which was terrible, the aura of the Lunar environment. Nothing living, nothing growing... changeless forever. A brightly-lit house next door, with a family seated at their breakfast table, chatting and enjoying themselves: Barrows could provide them, as he would provide air, heat, houses and water. I had to hand it to the man. From my standpoint it was fine except for one single joker. Obviously, every effort would be made to keep the secret. But if the efforts were a failure, if news got out, probably Barrows would be financially ruined, possibly even prosecuted and sent to jail. And we would go with him.

As Philip K. Dick novels go, We Can Build You requires reconciling the qualities that make him a writer you return to with his flaws in execution. (True Dickheads will nonetheless find a way.) It does show PKD remarkably prescient about mega-rich grifters we’ve become so familiar with.

In Australia, Lady Frankenstein was released by Welles and his then-business partner Richard Lewellen, a former colleague of exploitation alm producer Kroger Babb, as a segment of their theatrical production Orgy of Evil. The performance section of the program, which combined spook show conventions with Grand Guignol elements, starred Welles as Satan's Prime Minister, and featured a series of illusions created with props purchased from Abbott's Magic Novelty Company that culminated in a statue of Satan coming to life to terrorize the audience; after an intermission, the flm would be screened. The show featured choreography by Anita Ardell, production design by William Hutchinson, and an original score by Tommy Tycho. The world premiere for Orgy of Evil was set to take place at the Metro Theatre in Sydney on July 6, 1973, but rolling blackouts forced it to be pushed back by a week to July 13. Due to financing difficulties and protests from religious groups, Orgy of Evil lasted for only a handful of performances, ending Welles' partnership with Lewellen.

I’m not up to making a list, but “underseen horror” makes me think of Lady Frankenstein (1971). Mel Welles, a frequent collaborator with Roger Corman, notably in Little Shop of Horrors, directs. Starring Rosalba Neri and Joseph Cotten.

Okay, problematic! But… BUT!!! He has a point! The failings of humans will forever disappoint, but humanity’s will to create something better - morally, artistically, technologically -should lead us to appreciate what we as a species are capable of, even when we fail as individuals
There is one quality which unites all great and per-durable writers, you don't NEED schools and colleges to keep 'em alive. Put them out of the curriculum, lay them in the dust of libraries, and once in every so often a chance reader, unsubsidized and unbribed, will dig them up again, put them in the light again, without asking favours.

I read Kurt Vonnegut’s Bluebeard around 1990 or so - recall enjoying it, but one of the few passages that stick out in my memory is this one. Seems like this applies to many matters of judgment besides art.

Also suspect the “never be mistaken” is meant ironically. 🤓

Circe Berman has just asked me how to tell a good painting from a bad one. I said that the best answer I had ever heard to that question, although imperfect, came from a painter named Syd Solomon, a man about my age who summers not far from here. I overheard him say it to a very pretty girl at a cocktail party maybe fifteen years ago. She was so wide-eyed and on tippy-toe! She sure wanted to learn all about art from him. "How can you tell a good painting from a bad one?" he said. This is the son of a Hungarian horse trainer. He has a magnificent handlebar mustache. "All you have to do my dear," he said, "is look at a million paintings, and then you can never be mistaken." It's true! It's true!
