the star of the deck was this absolute menace who locks down games after being augmented by removal and discard spells, assuming the opponent isn't going brrrr with their aggro.

31) Speak No Evil (2024, dir. James Watkins) - American thriller/horror remake of a Danish/Dutch film. Mostly lives up to the original outside of the ending, but still a pretty fun boilerplate thriller. The original is bleaker but feels more artistically-whole, but this one is still good!
3-star review of Speak No Evil (2024): "listen to your fucking wife if she says the vibes are off As a remake: it's a less bleak than the original, especially with the changes made to the final act. That impacts how the ending landed for me. It's otherwise faithful to the original and delivers well emotionally. But that means similarly to the original, you can see everything coming from a mile away. An enjoyable experience, still, if you enjoy this kind of thriller."

30) Bloat (2025, dir. Pablo Absento) - Japanese/American found footage horror. A nothingburger of a found footage flick, and while it's not impossible to make kappa unnerving (hi Senritsu Kaiki 3) I don't think this Host/War of the Worlds 2025-style found footage works for that.
This genuinely would've been a much better film if it weren't an Unfriended/Host/War of the Worlds 2025-styled found footage film. The ending shifts to standard filmmaking techniques anyway and is the best-looking part of the film. Otherwise everything looks a bit too clean and crisp for found footage outside of the overabundance of datamoshing to try to convey horror. The plot's really nothing, some of the performances are fine, and the ideas for a generic yokai movie are there. The execution makes it all bloat before falling flat.

29) Meatball Machine Kodoku (2017, dir. Yoshihiro Nishimura) - Japanese cyberpunk splatter horror. Its human core works better for me than the first film but after the first half hour the splatter takes center stage. Gory, campy, stupid. I adore this.
3.5-star review of Meatball Machine Kodoku: " it takes awhile for it to get to the Meatball Machine we know, especially compared to the first film, but its extended intro giving us a melodramatic insight into Yuji's terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad day helped to set the tone! it really gets you to feel for the lead in a way that helps give an actual emotional core to the movie that I felt more strongly than the original. then the dome comes down, dicks and people get sliced in half, and it only gets more wild from there. really excellent practical effects, hilariously over-the-top kills, horrid CG & greenscreening that add to the camp...it's a splatter thrill ride through and through. featured are scenes including: - a woman shooting bullets out of her boobs - a still-living set of heads at the end of meaty nunchucks - a woman using her bra and shirt to take control of a NecroBog and ride it like a horse and so much more! if you like stupid and gory flicks, definitely check it out!"

28) The Monkey (2025, dir. Osgood Perkins) - American supernatural black comedy. The writing is fucking atrocious but its sense of comedic timing is really good. The kills are over-the-top & gory but don't detract from how light the film feels.

This is really fucking stupid, y'all, and it knows it.

27) Suspiria (1977, dir. Dario Argento) - Italian giallo/supernatural horror. Of course this film is a perennial favourite. A marvel of technicolour film, as gorgeous to look at as it is mysterious.
5-star review of Suspiria (1977): " a technicolor marvel, even after previously seeing it multiple times and its influence being felt in so much of filmmaking and other forms of art visually-striking, engaging plot, just an absolute sensory delight all around. this film made me think about making movies back in the day and holds a special place in my heart"

26) Mr. Jones (2013, dir. Karl Mueller) - American mockumentary horror. Uses the found footage format in a truly intriguing way, really playing with the idea that our perception is our reality. Did not expect this going in!
4-star review of Mr. Jones (2013): " wait hold on why does this movie fuck severely excellent documentary-framed found footage horror that really manages to use the form to play with perception versus reality and how they can often be one and the same for the person experiencing it. really gets you thinking about the evocative power of art. i did not see this one coming at all and i feel like if you enjoy more experimental takes on found footage horror you'll find something to enjoy here!"

25) Images (1972, dir. Robert Altman) - British psychological horror. It's pretty rote by today's standards, but it manages to make a compellingly human narrative out of what Cathryn is experiencing.
4-star review of Images (1972): " Robert Altman is a director that I am decidedly underfamiliar with, and I'm glad I decided to take the plunge with this flick. This film really does speak for itself from minute one, being a psychological thriller that's focused on perception not truly being reality. Susannah York's performance especially sells this concept that's been done time and time again, and really turns Cathryn into a complex character. Her anxieties about the writing process, pregnancy, and the complex relationship she has with the people she shares her affection break down into a series of delusions that grow ever hazier between what is actually real and what isn't. This is an excellently-paced tale with very brief flashes of violence that seem to resemble a grasp for control. Tense and stressful, with moments of levity truly feeling only like moments."

24) Ichi the Killer (2001, dir. Takashi Miike) - Japanese hyperviolent crime horror. I somehow forgot just how *much* Ichi the Killer is and I have been reminded. Also everyone is compellingly awful in this film.
4-star review of Ichi the Killer: " I forgot how much this film is somehow Despite some bad CG, this film still hits. Over the top gratuitous gore, compellingly weird characters, a noisy score and good sound effect work…this sure is Takashi Miike firing on all cylinders"
