Yeah don't worry about that stuff as long as you're enjoying it. The one thing I do recommend is a matte top coat. Protects the figure, panel lining and stickers and takes away the plastic shine to give it a bit of "realism".

Tamiya TS-80 is a great spray can for it, you only need 2-3 light coats.

They do get more and more convoluted and, in some cases, outright daft.
